The Facts

Why businesses like yours love our commingled recycling services

Keeping it Clean with Commingled

Commingled recycling captures all of your business’ valuable containers, bottles, cans and jars made of metal, plastic or glass. Unlike single stream recycling, it keeps these materials separate from paper and fibrous materials. We’re a big fan of implementing clean stream commingled collection, because it keeps landfill diversion rates high, while eliminating the high contamination rate that come with single stream collection – which is now as high as 40% in some municipalities!

Commingled, Not Complex

Commingled recycling includes many kinds of containers, but it’s not complicated! Upon implementation, we work with your staff, students or tenants to make sure everyone is educated and up to date on what is accepted in each stream. Many materials may be collected in your commingled recycling container, including:

  • Aluminum cans, trays and foils
  • Cartons (milk, juice, food, soup, etc.)
  • Metal cans
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles and food containers

Plastic Planet

Did you know there’s been more than enough plastic created to equal an entire ton of the stuff for every human on Earth? For this reason and more, recycling commingled containers is critical. Luckily, it’s a lot simpler than it seems for businesses to opt in! Best practice is to collect all clean, rinsed and numbered plastic containers and bottles, along with metal cans and glass bottles. This way, the materials are kept clean and valuable, which ensures successful recycling!

Commingled Recycling
Tips & Info

Avoid Food Contamination

Help recycle successfully by keeping your materials clean – rinsing out bottles and cans goes a long way! Recyclable bottles or containers that contain more than 8% food residue should not be recycled – please dispose of saturated containers in your trash.

Ban Styrofoam

When possible, avoid using polystyrene, Styrofoam and packing peanuts. They’re 95% air, making them very useful for packing, but very difficult to reuse or recycle. When it comes time to toss them, it’s best to keep them out of your commingled recycling. They mess with the recycling equipment and are ultimately sent to landfill.

Limit Thin Plastics

Thin plastic sheeting, disposable grocery bags, and packaging (like chip bags and candy bar wrappers) are tricky materials! Try to keep them out of your commingled recycling. While technically recyclable, they clog up most recycling facility machinery, which means only very specific places accept them. Check locally to see where these materials are recyclable near you, or reach out – we’re always happy to help!
