Paper Recycling Tips and Information

10,000 / Year

Office workers consume an average of 10,000 sheets of paper per year – or, 4 million tons of copy paper collectively. The good news is that all of those PowerPoint print outs and office flyers are inherently recyclable. The best practice for recycling is to collect paper separately. This keeps the fibers clean and retains its value for longer!

The 5-7 Lives of Paper

That scrap piece of paper you’re doodling on may have had other lives. While paper is inherently recyclable, unfortunately it’s not infinitely recyclable. That’s because each time a piece of paper is recycled, its fibers become shorter. Typically, paper can be washed and reused between 5 and 7 times, depending on how clean its fibers are kept. After a certain point, the fibers become too short to bond back together.

Staples or Stickies? Still Recyclable

If you’re worried about the stray staple or sticky note contaminating a load, you can rest easy. Once the paper is pulped, it’s screened for common contaminants, like staples and binder clips, which are immediately removed. Most mills today are equipped to remove the sticky adhesive from mixed papers, such as Post-it Notes. Still wondering if your paper is recyclable? Just ask – we’re happy to help find you an answer!
